Bryan Bullington beats best for first career win

Bryan Bullington toppled the kings on Sunday afternoon. The Royals pitcher made his ninth career start and picked up just his first career win, taking down A.J. Burnett and his New York Yankees. Bullington stifled Yankee hitters for eight innings in an uncharacteristic show of dominance, earning a 1-0 win by allowing just two hits and a walk and collecting five strikeouts. The performance he delivered may earn him another start after making his first start of the season last Tuesday against the Angels.

The Doc, Roy Halladay, delivers fifth consecutive win

The doctor is in. Roy Halladay picked up his 15th win of the season on Saturday against the Mets and with that win he brought himself into the top five in all three National League Pitching Triple Crown categories. His 15 wins have him third behind Ubaldo Jimenez and Adam Wainwright’s 17; 2.24 ERA is also third, behind Tim Hudson’s 2.13 and Wainwright’s 1.99, and his 175 strikeouts place first among National Leaguers, 10 ahead of Felix Hernandez.

Luis Castillo bumping heads with the Mets after benching

New York Mets second baseman Luis Castillo is unhappy with his team. Can you blame him? The 34-year-old veteran was recently replaced by rookie Ruben Tejada for the starter’s position. Castillo has been struggling somewhat this season, his numbers are down from what they’ve been in previous years, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a good major league baseball player who has not had at least one bad season to his credit, despite Castillo’s advanced age.

Peter Bourjos racing into the hearts of Angels fans

Peter Bourjos has arrived. The 23-year-old rookie is making a name for himself as fast as his legs can carry him, and that’s pretty damn fast. Bourjos has been compared to Carl Crawford, at least by footrace standards. He was formally introduced to the Los Angeles Angels fans for the first time on Monday when he started in his first game at Angel Stadium. Now, he’s already getting cheers from the crowd for his fantastic defensive skills and his jerseys are starting to sell. Not bad for a nine-game rookie.

Converting Bryce Harper makes sense for Washington Nationals

Should the Nationals even consider keeping first-overall pick Bryce Harper in the catcher’s position? At the 2010 MLB Entry Draft, Washington selected Harper as an outfielder, but indicated that they may use him in his primary college position behind the plate. However, that decision may slow down Harper’s ascension to the majors and even shorten the length of his career due to the high physical demands that the catcher position puts on the human body.

Race between Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals heating up

The St. Louis Cardinals started the week two games back of Cincinnati for first place in the National League Central division. By the end of the week, they’ll probably be two games ahead. The two clubs started a three -game series on Monday night with St. Louis coming out on top 7-3 on a masterful pitching performance by ace Chris Carpenter. The Cards reload for games two and three with Jaime Garcia and Adam Wainwright.

Ilya Kovalchuk back on market after being denied massive contract

On the 22-year anniversary of the Edmonton Oilers trade of Wayne Gretzky to the Los Angeles Kings, the NHL has achieved another victory; this time a much different one. Arbitrator Richard Bloch has decided in favor of the NHL in regards to the ludicrous 17-year, $102 million contract offered by the New Jersey Devils to Ilya Kovalchuk. With that decision, 2010’s hottest unrestricted free agent is back on the market, and New Jersey may not win out a second time.

Toronto Blue Jays’ J.P. Arencibia shines in dream debut

J.P. Arencibia put together one of the greatest major league debuts ever on Saturday, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, a single and a double. No other major leaguer in the modern era has had that kind of production in their first big league game. Arencibia took an up and in fastball up and out over the left field fence. It was the first pitch he saw. Later, he took a low and away offering over the right field wall and rounded the bases to a standing ovation from the Rogers Centre faithful. He then delivered a curtain call.

The Tampa Bay Rays pitching is driving the ship

The Tampa Bay Rays are picking a poor time to go through a team-wide slump. After a 17-11 thrashing from the Blue Jays on Saturday afternoon, the Rays have now lost four in a row; the longest losing skid of the season for the American Wild Card leaders. Despite the 17-run outburst, the Rays have some of the best pitching in baseball. The night before they lost 2-1, but both were unearned; just the second time in club history they have lost without giving up an earned run.

Nolan Ryan outbids Mark Cuban for the Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers are having a pretty good season this year. The last time you probably heard somebody say that was in 1999 when the Rangers were swept by the New York Yankees in the American League Divisional Series. Since then, the Rangers plummeted in the ranks of the AL West and have slowly been climbing to get out of it. The latest chapter of Rangers history began yesterday when Nolan Ryan outbid Mark Cuban to become the newest owner of the recovering franchise.
